More Information About This Class

For first lesson, I would spend around 5-10 minutes accessing student’s strengths and weaknesses. Within the few lessons, I will be able to generate a profile of student’s mathematic ability and tailor lessons based on his/her capability.
For advanced lessons ( learning new concepts before school’s pace), I would first introduce the concepts to students, explain and let them practice to allow better understanding of concepts. ( Since mathematics is more of a “practice” subject ) At the last 5 minutes of the lesson, I would discuss with students which topic I will be going through next lesson. Work will also be given for students to practice.
For catchup lessons ( relearning topics already taught by school), I would ask students which topics they would like to go through before the lesson and prepare material ( notes, practice worksheets ) for the lesson.
Note:
1. There will be a test every 2 weeks (frequency depends) to assess whether students have understood the concept. A stamp card will be given. If student scores 75%, a stamp will be given. Stamps can be collected and used to exchange for gifts. On the flip side, if students get below 50%, they will have to copy the corrections for 10 times. (Aim: to act as an encouragement for students to work hard for the test and treat it seriously so I can assess accurately their potential)
2. Students will be required to purchase assessment books to be used in the lesson. ( great resources for sylllabus-related practice )

Principle: As a tutor, I promise to do my very best in coaching every student, but the ultimate deciding factor is the student himself/herself. Students must be willing to learn in order to benefit from the lessons. Amount of improvement depends on students’ attitude and learning capability.

Tutor's Experience

•Peer tutor in secondary school for 4 years
•Tutored a Sec 3 NT Mathematics student for 9 months (continuing next year)
• My first mathematic student was a student with rather weak foundation, with difficulties in basic addition, subtraction, division, multiplication even at Sec 3 level. It was challenging for both of us. But with immense patience and sheer determination ( and of course a lot of alterations to my lesson style to find one that perfectly fits her learning method), she improved gradually. From not understanding algebra at all to now where she can effortlessly solve algebra, I can say that we have both did our best as tutor and student. Tests and homework was periodically given out (but intensity and amount varied as I was afraid of putting too much pressure on student in addition to school work). I believed her, and she believed in herself too. She was unwavering, hardworking and really willing to learn- and all these was what fuelled her improvement. Once a student, I knew what teaching methods benefited me the most and hence combined all sorts of teaching methods to tailor to my tutee. I don’t believe in sheer memorising, but true understanding, because memorising will not trigger students to think critically or gain the ability to apply, which is especially important as all math syllabus tends towards application nowadays.
