Students will get to learn English Language in a relaxed setting and get to glean from other students' response. As languages need to be spoken and written, part of the class will involve writing and part will be based on interaction. This is key in language learning in a realistic context and both aspects are important.
Apart from the usual strategies applied in schools, I create resources to help students easily apply current affairs, news articles and TED talks to their work. This class is suitable for students who want to go beyond just scoring well for tests, and to enjoy the language for long-term, holistic benefits. For students to benefit from language learning, they should be exposed to and apply all aspects of language as much as they can in their formative years.
Increasingly, students are asked to demonstrate competencies beyond the tests (eg. interviews to tertiary institutes and write-ups for application to courses) and this is the key to their success when subject content is no longer the focus.
Upper Secondary students will stand to benefit immensely from developing effective communication skills to face the demands of their world.
Tutor's Experience
I've been tutoring for a few years in various settings and across different age groups. With 6 years of experience in mainstream schools and volunteering experience in a few special education schools, I've come to learn that every student has different learning needs that sometimes cannot be fulfilled in a large group.
The teacher-student relationship is key in allowing a student to speak well and with initiative and I seek to provide a comfortable setting that takes the stress away from language learning, which is sometimes extremely difficult for a child.
Every students should get customised learning material that plays up his or her strengths and targets areas that need improvement effectively. That said, a student in a small group class will stand to be benefit from interaction, which is a key component in English.
