IB Lounge was started by passionate tutors who believed in doing their best for their students with an emphasis on application-based learning. We fundamentally believe in achieving three tiers of learning: understanding the concept, applying concepts to real life, and enjoying the process of learning. We believe in focusing on understanding concepts rather than memorizing, which improves long-term retention of content knowledge and promotes critical thinking when problem solving. These are soft skills which are best developed in adolescence which will prove beneficial in an age where life-long learning is critical.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, all our lessons will by held on zoom until further notice. Our tutors have been equipped with iPads and drawing pads to facilitate teaching and drawing during lessons.
A few words from our tutor:
Through my experience as both a student and a tutor, I aim to guide my tutees to see beyond the short-term exams, to understand why you need to learn this, and how to learn it effectively.
Firstly, I plan my lessons around the core syllabus. I understand that your priority is to achieve good grades, and that comes with knowing what is expected of you for your exams. I also centre my teaching around my tutee's school notes, helping them to better understand and utilise their own notes, as opposed to just supplying more notes to study. I use practice questions to emphasise concepts, by showing how the same concept can be tested in different variations.
Secondly, I believe that doing well also comes naturally from understanding and enjoying the learning process. This is something that is not often emphasised in school. I often link related topics together to allow my tutees to appreciate the big picture of a particular subject. This is useful for higher-order application questions, which has become more common, with the shift away from factual-recall questions. I also make my lessons interactive and engaging through question and answers for active recall, and I supplement with drawings and diagrams for the visual learners.
I will tailor my lessons to your learning needs, and I hope to show you how easy it can be to do well, and to learn to love what you are learning.
