THE ULTIMATE GENERAL PAPER CRASH COURSE (3 DAYS)

Dates: 2 September 2017, Saturday to 4 September 2017, Monday (tbc)

Duration & Time: 4 hours each day, 9am to 1pm (tbc)

Rates: $400 per student ($33.3/hr)

Component #1: Essay component
Content:
⇨Media & Censorship
◆Students will explore the impact of new media on the communication and control of information in this day and age, especially the tension between freedom of information and the need for censorship.

⇨Politics & Society
◆Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the role of politics both in the past and present, and how and why governments are structured as they are now. Pertinent issues of governance and social concerns will be highlighted through the discussion of current affairs both internationally and locally such as the Trump presidency and Singapore’s impending elections for a minority president. Students will engage with topics such as social welfare, societal inequalities, discrimination and prejudice, and partisan politics.

⇨Science & Religion
◆Students will develop an understanding of how science and technology is driving new industries, progress and how it may impact our future. The discovery of new knowledge has to balanced with religion and other traditional ideologies, and how such a clash of ideas can be negotiated to arrive at a desirable resolution.

⇨How to formulate an essay plan
⇨Construction of clear thesis statements
⇨Development of persuasive and cogent arguments
⇨How to write engaging introduction and conclusion paragraphs

Component #2: Application Question (AQ)
⇨Analysing and evaluating the author’s message and the underlying assumptions of the article
⇨Formulating an opinion or response to the author’s perspective
